Black Flag

Hermosa Beach, California. Formed 1976 by Greg Ginn (guitar). Originally called Panic, renamed Black Flag 1978. Keith Morris (vocals, 1978-1979), Ron Reyes (vocals, 1979-1980), Dez Cadena (vocals, 1980), Henry Rollins (vocals, 1981-1986). The most important American hardcore band.

Why Black Flag Matters

Black Flag didn’t just play hardcore — they built the infrastructure. Greg Ginn founded sst-records to release their records. The band’s van-touring network, self-booked shows, and DIY distribution created the template for every underground band that followed. They played everywhere — squats, warehouses, living rooms, any space that would have them.

Key Releases

  • Nervous Breakdown (1978, EP) — Keith Morris. Four songs. Raw HC.
  • Jealous Again (1980, EP) — Ron Reyes. Five songs.
  • Six Pack (1981, EP) — Dez Cadena. Transitional.
  • Damaged (1981, SST) — Henry Rollins. The hardcore album. “Rise Above,” “TV Party,” “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie.” Produced by Spot. One of the most important punk albums ever.
  • My War (1984) — Side A: hardcore. Side B: three songs over 7 minutes each, slow, heavy, sludgy. Predicted post-metal by a decade. Baffled fans, influenced everyone.
  • Slip It In (1984), Loose Nut (1985), In My Head (1985) — Continued experimentation.
  • The Process of Weeding Out (1985, EP) — Instrumental. Free jazz/punk.

The Rollins Factor

Henry Rollins (born Henry Garfield) joined in 1981 after seeing the band at a show. His intense, physical performance style — shirtless, veins bulging, screaming directly at audience members — became hardcore’s defining image. Rollins later became a spoken word artist, actor, publisher (2.13.61), and cultural figure.

SST and the Business

Black Flag’s relentless touring and recording schedule, combined with Ginn’s SST Records, created punk’s first self-sustaining underground economy. They proved you could be a band, run a label, book your own tours, and survive without any industry support. The legal battles with Unicorn Records (which delayed Damaged’s release) became a cautionary tale about major label interference.

After Black Flag

  • Keith Morris formed Circle Jerks (1979-2010, reunited) — another foundational HC band. Also OFF! (2009-) with members of Burning Brides and Redd Kross.
  • Henry Rollins — solo career, Rollins Band, spoken word, acting.
  • Greg Ginn — continued SST, various projects. Controversial for catalog management.
  • Dez Cadena — later played in Misfits.
  • Chuck Dukowski (bass) — various post-Flag projects.
