Green Day

Formed in Berkeley, California in 1987 by Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals/guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass), and Tré Cool (drums, replacing original drummer John Kiffmeyer in 1990). One of the defining bands of 90s punk and arguably the single biggest act to bring punk rock to mainstream audiences.

Key Releases

  • 39/Smooth (1990) — Debut album on Lookout! Records. Raw, melodic punk.
  • Kerplunk (1991) — Last album on Lookout!. Showed growing songwriting sophistication.
  • Dookie (1994) — Breakthrough. 20+ million copies sold worldwide. Singles “Basket Case,” “Longview,” “When I Come Around.” Won Grammy for Best Alternative Album (1995). Covered masturbation, bisexuality, anxiety, loneliness — taboo subjects delivered with pop hooks.
  • Insomniac (1995) — Darker, more aggressive follow-up. Commercially successful but marked the start of backlash from punk purists.
  • Nimrod (1997) — More experimental. “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” became a cultural staple.
  • Warning (2000) — Acoustic/folk-punk leanings. Underperformed commercially.
  • American Idiot (2004) — Rock opera. Massive comeback, 16+ million sold. Title track became anti-Bush anthem. Broadway adaptation (2010).
  • 21st Century Breakdown (2009) — Second rock opera. Grammy for Best Rock Album.
  • Revolution Radio (2016), Father of All Motherfuckers (2020), Saviors (2024) — Continued output into 2020s.

Scene Context

Green Day came up through the 924 Gilman Street all-ages venue in Berkeley alongside bands like Rancid, Operation Ivy, and The Mr. T Experience. The Gilman scene was rooted in DIY ethics — Green Day’s signing to Reprise Records (major label) in 1993 led to their banning from Gilman, which lasted years. This tension between DIY purity and mainstream success became a defining narrative of 90s punk.

Influence

85+ million albums sold. Alongside the-offspring and blink-182, Green Day formed the commercial triumvirate that defined pop-punk’s mainstream era. Their success opened doors for virtually every punk-adjacent band that followed in the late 90s and 2000s.
