Lifetime
New Brunswick, New Jersey. Formed 1990 by Ari Katz (vocals) and Dan Yemin (guitar, ex-Enuf). Melodic hardcore that bridged the gap between NJ hardcore and emo in a way no other band managed. One of the most important bands in the New Brunswick scene and one of the key bridges between hardcore and the 2000s emo/pop-punk explosion.
Key Releases
- Background (1993) — Debut. Raw melodic hardcore.
- Hello Bastards (1995, Jade Tree) — The breakthrough. “Turnpike,” “I’m Not Calling You.” Emotional, fast, catchy. The album that took Lifetime from NJ basements to the ears of punk fans everywhere.
- Jersey’s Best Dancers (1997, Jade Tree) — THE classic. “Cut the Tension,” “The Verona Kings Are Dead,” “25 Cent Girls.” Arguably the best melodic hardcore album of the 1990s. Twelve songs, 25 minutes, every one perfect.
The NJ Connection
Lifetime were central to the new-brunswick-scene alongside Bouncing Souls, Thursday, and others. Dan Yemin’s later projects (Kid Dynamite, Paint It Black) kept NJ hardcore alive through the 2000s. The band’s influence on subsequent NJ bands — particularly the 2000s emo/pop-punk wave (Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance’s early work) — is enormous.
Dan Yemin
Dan Yemin is one of punk’s most important figures:
- Lifetime — guitarist
- Kid Dynamite — (1997-2000) Philadelphia/NJ punk
- Paint It Black — (2002-) Philadelphia hardcore. New Lexicon (2008).
- Yemin is also a psychologist — one of the few punk musicians with a PhD
After Lifetime
- Reunited 2006. Released Lifetime (2007, Decaydance/Fueled by Ramen) — the major label album. Solid but couldn’t match the 90s magic.
- Continued playing shows sporadically.
