NOFX

Los Angeles / San Francisco, California. Formed 1983 by Fat Mike (Michael Burkett, vocals/bass), Eric Melvin (guitar), and Erik “Smelly” Sandin (drums). El Hefe (Aaron Abeyta, guitar/trumpet) joined 1991. One of the longest-running and most prolific punk bands — 14 studio albums over 40 years. Also founded fat-wreck-chords, making Fat Mike one of punk’s most powerful figures.

Key Releases

  • Liberal Animation (1988) — Debut. Early hardcore.
  • White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean (1992) — The sound crystallized: fast, melodic, funny, politically sharp.
  • Punk in Drublic (1994) — The classic. “Linoleum,” “Don’t Call Me White,” “The Brews.” Peak skate-punk. Certified gold.
  • Heavy Petting Zoo (1996) — Darker, more experimental.
  • So Long and Thanks for All the Shoes (1997) — Return to form.
  • Pump Up the Valuum (2000) — Title is a spoonerism.
  • The War on Errorism (2003) — Anti-Bush. “Franco Un-American.”
  • Wolves in Wolves’ Clothing (2006), Coaster (2009), Self Entitled (2012), First Ditch Effort (2016), Single Album (2021), Double Album (2022) — Consistent output.
  • Final tour (2023-2024) — Last shows.

NOFX’s Role

NOFX occupied a unique position: too funny and irreverent for political punk purists, too skilled and prolific to dismiss, too punk to ever cross over to mainstream success. Fat Mike’s between-song banter — equal parts comedy, politics, and self-deprecation — was as much a draw as the music.

The band’s refusal to make music videos or pursue mainstream promotion was a deliberate choice. They could have been Green Day-level but chose not to — or at least that’s the mythology.

Fat Wreck Chords

Fat Mike founded fat-wreck-chords in 1990 with Erin Burkett. The label became the most important melodic punk label of the 1990s-2000s. NOFX’s existence funded the label; the label funded NOFX’s freedom. The symbiosis is punk’s most successful artist-label relationship.
