Pitchfork
San Diego, California. Formed 1986 by John Reis (guitar/vocals) and Rick Froberg (guitar/vocals). Active 1986-1990. The first “real” band for both Reis and Froberg — the seed that grew into drive-like-jehu, rocket-from-the-crypt, and Hot Snakes.
Key Releases
- Eucalyptus (1990, Nemesis Records) — The only full-length. Raw post-hardcore. The template for everything Reis and Froberg did later.
Why Pitchfork Matters
Pitchfork was the band that started the San Diego post-hardcore lineage. Before Gravity Records, before Drive Like Jehu, before Rocket from the Crypt — there was Pitchfork, playing chaotic hardcore in San Diego’s late-80s scene. Reis and Froberg’s partnership began here and continued for decades.
The band broke up in 1990, and both members immediately formed Drive Like Jehu — taking the Pitchfork template and pushing it further.
