Ramones

Forest Hills, Queens, New York City. Formed 1974 by Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Hyman, vocals), Johnny Ramone (John Cummings, guitar), Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Colvin, bass), and Tommy Ramone (Thomas Erdelyi, drums). All adopted the surname “Ramone.” Active 1974-1996. The most important band in punk rock history.

Why the Ramones Matter

The Ramones didn’t invent punk — the Stooges, the New York Dolls, and others came first. But the Ramones defined it: fast, short, loud, simple songs with pop hooks. No guitar solos. No complexity. “Blitzkrieg Bop” in under three minutes. Their uniform (leather jackets, ripped jeans, sneakers) created punk’s visual template. Their setlists were 20+ songs in 30 minutes.

Key Releases

  • Ramones (1975) — “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Beat on the Brat,” “Judy Is a Punk.” 29 minutes. Changed everything.
  • Leave Home (1977) — “Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment,” “Carbona Not Glue.”
  • Rocket to Russia (1977) — “Sheena Is a Punk Rocker,” “Rockaway Beach.” Most polished.
  • Road to Ruin (1978) — Slightly more complex. “I Wanna Be Sedated.”
  • End of the Century (1980) — Phil Spector production. Controversial. “Do You Remember Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio?”
  • Pleasant Dreams (1981), Subterranean Jungle (1983), Too Tough to Die (1984) — Later albums had diminishing commercial impact but remained influential.
  • Brain Drain (1989) — “I Believe in Miracles.”
  • Mondo Bizarro (1992), Acid Eaters (1993), ¡Adios Amigos! (1995) — Final albums.

CBGB and the Scene

The Ramones were central to the cbgb scene alongside Television, Blondie, Talking Heads, Richard Hell, and Patti Smith. Their residency at CBGB (starting 1974) drew the audience that became the first wave of American punk. Malcolm McLaren saw them at CBGB and was inspired to create the Sex Pistols.

The UK Connection

The Ramones’ first UK tour (July 1976, before they were famous at home) is one of punk’s most important events. Future members of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Damned, and virtually every UK punk band were in the audience. Johnny Ramone’s downstroke-only guitar technique became the template for punk guitar worldwide.

Legacy

2,263 concerts. 14 studio albums. Zero hit singles in the US (the highest charting was “Do You Remember Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio?” at #82). Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. All four original members are now dead (Dee Dee 2002, Joey 2001, Johnny 2004, Tommy 2014).

The Ramones’ influence is immeasurable. Every pop-punk band, every hardcore band, every band that plays fast and loud owes them something. The Ramones logo (the presidential seal parody) is one of the most recognized symbols in music.
