Hardcore Matinees
Saturday (or Sunday) afternoon punk and hardcore shows — all-ages, no alcohol, cheap admission, ending before dinner. The matinee format is NYC punk’s most important institutional innovation: it created a space for kids who couldn’t get into bars.
The Format
- Time: Saturday or Sunday afternoon, usually 1-5pm
- Admission: $5-10 donation (sliding scale)
- Age: All-ages (no ID required)
- Alcohol: None (or minimal)
- Bands: 3-5 bands, 20-30 minute sets
- End: Before evening — respect the neighbors, respect the space

Why Matinees Matter
The matinee format solved a fundamental problem: punk’s audience is young, but venues are bars. Matinees created all-ages spaces where:
- Kids under 21 could see bands
- No alcohol meant fewer fights and a different vibe
- Afternoon timing meant shows ended early enough for kids to get home
- Low admission meant accessibility
The matinee tradition spread nationwide — every punk scene has its version of the Saturday afternoon show. But NYC’s matinee culture, especially at ABC No Rio, is the template.
