Digital Hardcore

Genre fusing punk rock, hardcore, electronic music (techno, breakcore, industrial), and noise. Emerged from Berlin’s underground in the early 1990s. Characterized by distorted vocals, breakbeat rhythms, aggressive synthesizers, and anti-fascist/anti-capitalist politics.

Atari Teenage Riot and the Berlin Scene

Atari Teenage Riot (Berlin, 1992-2000, reunited 2010) is the genre’s defining band:

Alec Empire (Alexander Wilke) — founder, producer, guitarist/vocalist. Also ran Digital Hardcore Recordings (DHR), the genre’s namesake label.
Hanin Elias — vocals. Left in 1999.
Carl Crack (Björn Dürer) — MC/vocals. Died 2001.
Nic Endo — joined 1997. Noise/performance artist.

Key releases:

Delete Yourself! (1995) — Debut. “Start the Riot!” became a punk-rave anthem.
The Future of War (1997) — Darker, more industrial.
60 Second Wipe Out (1999) — Most ambitious. Guest appearances from DHR artists.

ATR’s sound: 180+ BPM breakbeats, distorted guitar riffs, screamed/shouted vocals (often multiple voices), political sloganeering. A direct response to the post-reunification Berlin of the early 90s — squatter culture, neo-Nazi violence, techno hedonism.
