Grindcore

Extreme music genre that fuses hardcore punk’s speed and aggression with death metal’s heaviness. Characterized by blast beats, guttural/shrieked vocals, extremely short songs (many under 60 seconds), and anti-establishment politics. Emerged in the UK in the mid-1980s, evolved globally through the 1990s-2020s.

Origins (1985-1990)

  • Napalm Death (Birmingham, 1981-) — THE grindcore band. Mick Harris coined the term. Scum (1987, Earache Records) is the genre’s founding document — Side A alone features songs averaging under 30 seconds. The “You Suffer” (1.316 seconds, Guinness record for shortest song) became grind’s iconic artifact.
  • Extreme Noise Terror (Ipswich, 1985-) — Dual screamed vocals. A Holocaust in Your Head (1989).
  • Carcass (Liverpool, 1985-) — Started as goregrind (Reek of Putrefaction, 1988). Evolved through death metal to melodic death metal. Bill Steer and Jeff Walker.
  • Terrorizer (LA, 1986-) — World Downfall (1989). Pete Sandoval’s blast beats influenced everything after.
  • Repulsion (Flint, MI, 1984-) — Horrified (recorded 1986, released 1989). Proto-grindcore.

1990s Evolution

Grindcore splintered into sub-styles:

  • Death-grind: Napalm Death’s 90s output (Harmony Corruption, 1990; Fear, Emptiness, Despair, 1994). Incorporated death metal songwriting.
  • Goregrind: Carcass pioneered it; General Surgery (Sweden), Regurgitate (Sweden). Medical/biological themes.
  • Noisegrind: Ultra-lo-fi. Anal Cunt (Boston, 1988-2011), Agoraphobic Nosebleed (US).

Key 90s bands:

  • Pig Destroyer (Richmond, 1997-) — Scott Hull (also Agoraphobic Nosebleed). Prowler in the Yard (2001) is a grindcore landmark.
  • Brutal Truth (NYC, 1990-1999, 2006-2014) — Kevin Sharp. Need to Control (1994), Sounds of the Animal Kingdom (1997). Dan Lilker (ex-Nuclear Assault/Anthrax).
  • Nasum (Sweden, 1992-2004) — Mieszko Talarczyk died in the 2004 tsunami. Human 2.0 (2000), Helvete (2003). Grindcore’s most devastating loss.
  • Discordance Axis (NJ, 1992-2001) — Jon Chang. Technically precise, emotionally devastating. The Inalienable Dreamless (2000).
  • Assück (Florida, 1987-1998) — Misery Index (1997). Political grindcore.
  • Phobia (Orange County, 1990-) — Long-running crust-grind.

2000s-2020s

  • Gridlink (NJ, 2004-2014) — Discordance Axis successor. Amber Gray (2008), Longhena (2014).
  • Full of Hell (Ocean City, MD, 2009-) — Grindcore/noise/harsh noise. Collaborations with Merzbow, The Body. Trumpeting Ecstasy (2017).
  • Cloud Rat (Michigan, 2010-) — Grindcore with melodic and atmospheric elements.
  • Wormrot (Singapore, 2007-) — International grind breakthrough. Voices (2016).
  • Primitive Man (Denver, 2012-) — Doom/grind/noise.
