Dischord Records

Washington, D.C. Founded 1980 by Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson to release their band the Teen Idles’ Minor Disturbance EP. The most important independent punk label in America and arguably the world. Co-owned by MacKaye and Nelson. 200+ releases from 60+ bands over 40+ years.

Philosophy

  • DC only: Dischord has always released only bands from the Washington, D.C. area. This is not parochialism — it’s a commitment to documenting a specific community rather than becoming a “cool indie label.”
  • Fair pricing: $5-$6 for records in the 80s/90s when majors charged $15+. All releases reasonably priced.
  • No contracts: Handshake deals. Bands own their music. Dischord takes a cut for manufacturing and distribution but the master recordings belong to the artists.
  • No major label distribution (for most of its history): Self-distributed, though later partnered with Southern for wider reach.

Key Releases (post-1990 focus)

The label’s 80s output (Minor Threat, Government Issue, Void, Rites of Spring, Embrace) is foundational, but the 90s-2000s catalog is equally important:

  • fugazi — Seven studio albums. The label’s flagship act and the reason Dischord survived and thrived into the 90s.
  • dag-nasty — Can I Say (1986), Wig Out at Denko’s (1987). Melodic hardcore.
  • Jawbox — For Your Own Special Sweetheart (1994). Post-hardcore. J. Robbins.
  • Shudder to Think — Art-punk. Pony Express Record (1994).
  • The Dismemberment Plan — Emergency & I (1999). Indie/punk. Travis Morrison.
  • Q and Not U — D.C. post-punk revival.
  • Beauty Pill — Chad Clark’s post-Dismemberment Plan project.
  • Edie Sedgwick — Justin Moyer’s art-punk.

The Dischord House

The label operates from a house in Arlington, VA — the “Dischord House.” Not a corporate office but a living/working space that has housed band members, label operations, and the studio. The house itself is a punk landmark.
