Mutant Pop

Record label and subgenre descriptor. Based in Portland, Oregon (later various locations). Founded by Joe King (of The Queers). The label specialized in what could be called “Ramonescore” — pop-punk that directly channels the Ramones’ template of simple chords, catchy melodies, and adolescent themes.

The Sound

Mutant Pop (the label) released music by bands in the Ramones-worshipping tradition:

  • The Riverdales — Ben Weasel (Screeching Weasel) side project. Pure Ramones worship.
  • The Queers — Joe King’s main band. Beat Off (1990), Don’t Back Down (1996).
  • Screeching Weasel — Ben Weasel. My Brain Hurts (1991), Anthem for a New Tomorrow (1993).
  • Various compilations of Ramones-style pop-punk.

The label’s catalog is short but represents a specific niche: 3-chord, 2-minute pop-punk with no pretensions of being anything else.

“Mutant Pop” as Genre

The term “mutant pop” became shorthand for this specific style of pop-punk — faster and rawer than radio pop-more melodic than hardcore, deliberately simple in its songwriting. Bands that fit the Mutant Pop aesthetic (whether or not they were on the label) include:

  • The Lillingtons — Sci-fi pop-punk.
  • The Copyrights — Carbondale, IL.
  • Teenage Bottlerocket — Laramie, WY.
  • The Ergs! — NJ.
