Jawbreaker

New York City (originally Los Angeles). Formed 1986 by Blake Schwarzenbach (vocals/guitar), Chris Bauermeister (bass), and Adam Pfahler (drums). One of the most important bands in the development of emo and melodic punk — and one of punk’s most tragic “what if” stories.

Key Releases

  • Unfun (1990, Shredder Records) — Debut. Raw, melodic. “Busy.”
  • Bivouac (1992, lookout-records) — Darker, more complex. “Chesterfield King,” “Condition Oakland.”
  • 24 Hour Revenge Therapy (1994, Communion/Tupelo) — The classic. “Boxcar,” “Ache,” “Do You Still Hate Me?” One of the best punk albums of the 90s — Schwarzenbach’s lyrics are devastating, the melodies are perfect, and the production (by Steve Albini) is raw but clear.
  • Dear You (1995, DGC/Geffen) — Major label debut. More polished. Schwarzenbach’s voice was surgically altered (polyps) between albums — the rasp was gone. The album was critically acclaimed but commercially disappointing. Fans called them sellouts.

The Sellout Controversy

Jawbreaker’s signing to DGC (Geffen) in 1995 was one of the most painful moments in 90s punk. The band had toured with Nirvana in 1993 — and signed to Nirvana’s label the week after denying they would. Fans felt betrayed. The backlash was intense: “Jawbreaker sold out” graffiti appeared everywhere.

Dear You was a good album — arguably their best musically — but the controversy overshadowed everything. The band broke up in 1996, three months after its release.

Blake Schwarzenbach

Blake Schwarzenbach is one of punk’s greatest lyricists — his words are literary, confessional, and emotionally precise. After Jawbreaker, he formed Jets to Brazil (1997-2003) — more indie/emo. Orange Rhyming Dictionary (1998) is a classic. Later: Thorns of Life, solo work.

Reunion

Jawbreaker reunited in 2017 (Riot Fest) after 21 years apart. Played festivals and headlining shows. Dear You was finally recognized as the masterpiece it always was.

Influence

Jawbreaker’s influence on emo and melodic punk is enormous. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is one of the most-cited albums by subsequent bands. The band proved that punk could be literary, confessional, and musically sophisticated without losing its edge. Every band that combines punk energy with poetic lyrics owes them something.
