Jawbox
Washington, D.C. Formed 1989 by J. Robbins (vocals/guitar, ex-Government Issue), Kim Coletta (bass), and Adam Wade (drums, later Bill Barbot on guitar). One of the most important post-hardcore bands of the early 90s — and a cautionary tale about major label signings.
Key Releases
- Grippe (1991, dischord-records) — Debut. Angular, aggressive post-hardcore.
- Novelty (1992, Dischord) — More melodic. “Cutoff,” “Static.”
- For Your Own Special Sweetheart (1994, Atlantic) — Major label debut. “Savory,” “Cooling Card.” The album that should have been huge — smart, heavy, dynamic. But Atlantic didn’t know how to market it.
- Jawbox (1996, Atlantic) — Self-titled. Even better. “Mirrorful.” But Atlantic dropped them shortly after.
The Atlantic Disaster
Jawbox signed to Atlantic Records in 1993, becoming one of the first Dischord bands to sign to a major. The results were musically excellent but commercially disastrous. Atlantic didn’t know what to do with a post-hardcore band — they had no radio format for it, no marketing angle. For Your Own Special Sweetheart and Jawbox are both great albums that almost nobody heard.
After Jawbox’s failure, dischord-records “circled the wagons” — making it clear the label was not a stepping stone to major label fame.
J. Robbins
J. Robbins is one of punk’s most important behind-the-scenes figures:
- Jawbox — vocalist/guitarist
- Burning Airlines (1997-2002) — post-Jawbox band
- Channels — later project
- Producer/engineer — Robbins became one of the most sought-after producers in punk/post-hardcore, engineering records for Clutch, The Dismemberment Plan, Murder by Death, and dozens of others.
Reunion
Jawbox reunited in 2019 for live shows. The reunion was greeted with enthusiasm — proof that the albums had aged well.
