Lagwagon

Goleta, California (near Santa Barbara). Formed 1990 by Joey Cape (vocals), Chris Flippin (guitar), Shawn Dewey (guitar), Jesse Buglione (bass), and Dave Raun (drums). First band signed to fat-wreck-chords. One of the defining bands of 90s skate-punk — fast, melodic, technically tight, emotionally underrated.

Key Releases

  • Duh (1992) — Debut. Fast, catchy.
  • Trashed (1994) — Breakthrough. “Know It All,” “Beer Goggles.” Produced by Fat Mike. The album that defined the Fat Wreck sound.
  • Hoss (1995) — Arguably their best. “Ride the Steel,” “Carry the Weight.” Produced by Ryan Greene at The Blasting Room.
  • Double Plaidinum (1997) — Darker. “Making Friends.”
  • Let’s Talk About Feelings (1998) — More emotional depth. “Know It All” (re-recorded).
  • Blaze (2003) — Return after hiatus.
  • Resolve (2005) — Dedicated to late friend.
  • Hang (2014) — First album in 9 years. Still vital.
  • Railer (2019) — Late-career peak.

Joey Cape

Joey Cape is one of punk’s most underappreciated songwriters — his melodies are impeccable, and his lyrics have more emotional depth than the “fun skate-punk” tag implies. Cape also fronts Bad Astronaut (indie/emo-punk), Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (cover band with Fat Mike), and has released solo material.

Influence

Lagwagon defined the “Fat Wreck sound” — fast, precise, melodic skate-punk that’s more emotionally complex than its surface suggests. Bands from New Found Glory to The Story So Far cite Lagwagon as a key influence.
