UK Punk

The British punk movement of 1976-1980. Inspired by the ramones and the New York scene, UK punk was angrier, more political, and more culturally disruptive than its American counterpart. Where US punk was an art scene, UK punk was a class war.

Key Bands

  • sex-pistols — London. The notoriety. “Anarchy in the U.K.,” “God Save the Queen.”

  • The Damned — London. The first UK punk single (“New Rose,” October 1976). First UK punk album (Damned Damned Damned, February 1977). Also first UK punk band to tour the US.
  • Buzzcocks — Manchester. Pete Shelley. Spiral Scratch (1977, self-released EP) — one of the first DIY punk releases. “Ever Fallen in Love (with Someone You Shouldn’t’ve).”
  • Siouxsie and the Banshees — London. Post-punk/goth. The Scream (1978).
  • Wire — London. Pink Flag (1977). 21 songs in 36 minutes. Art-punk minimalism.
  • X-Ray Spex — London. Poly Styrene. Germfree Adolescents (1978). Saxophone in punk. Feminist.
  • The Adverts — London. “One Chord Wonders,” “Gary Gilmore’s Eyes.”
  • Stiff Little Fingers — Belfast. Punk during the Troubles. Inflammable Material (1979).
  • The Undertones — Derry. “Teenage Kicks” (1978) — John Peel’s favorite single.

The Manchester Scene

Manchester’s punk scene was distinct from London’s:

  • Buzzcocks — organized the Lesser Free Trade Hall gigs (June/July 1976) where the Sex Pistols played to future members of Joy Division, The Fall, Magazine, and The Smiths
  • The Fall — Mark E. Smith. Post-punk. Never repeated themselves.
  • Joy Division (later New Order) — Post-punk. Unknown Pleasures (1979).

What UK Punk Created

UK punk’s legacy includes:

  • Post-punk — Joy Division, Siouxsie, Wire, Gang of Four
  • oi — working-class punk
  • anarcho-punk — Crass and the movement
  • Goth — Bauhaus, The Cure, Siouxsie
  • DIY — self-releasing, self-booking, zines
