Music blog founded 2004 (or 2005 — accounts vary). Originally covering the Brooklyn/Williamsburg indie music scene, expanded to become one of the most important music news and coverage sites of the blog era. Still active as of 2026 (unlike Pitchfork, which was folded into GQ).
What It Covered
BrooklynVegan started as a local Brooklyn scene blog — covering shows, venues, and bands in Williamsburg and the surrounding areas. As the blog era expanded, so did BrooklynVegan’s scope:
- Punk/emo/hardcore: The “In Defense of the Genre” column (started 2020s) became one of the best ongoing punk coverage outlets
- Indie rock: Show reviews, album announcements, tour news
- Metal: Surprisingly strong metal coverage
- Hip-hop: Selective but consistent
The Blog Era Context
BrooklynVegan was part of the blog ecosystem alongside Pitchfork, Stereogum, Oh My Rockness (NYC show listings), and dozens of smaller MP3 blogs. These sites collectively replaced traditional music journalism (print magazines) as the primary source for underground music discovery.
Why It Matters for Punk
BrooklynVegan’s punk coverage — especially the “In Defense of the Genre” column — has become one of the most reliable sources for punk news, reviews, and scene documentation in the 2020s. While Pitchfork folded and other blogs faded, BrooklynVegan adapted and survived.
