Dead Kennedys

San Francisco, California. Formed 1978 by Jello Biafra (Eric Boucher, vocals), East Bay Ray (Raymond Pepperell, guitar), Klaus Flouride (Geoffrey Lyall, bass), and Ted (Bruce Slesinger, drums, later replaced by D.H. Peligro). Active 1978-1986 (with reunions without Biafra 2001-present). The most political band in early hardcore.

Key Releases

  • Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980) — Debut. “California Über Alles,” “Holiday in Cambodia,” “Kill the Poor,” “Let’s Lynch the Landlord.” One of the best punk albums ever. Biafra’s satirical lyrics were razor-sharp — attacking Jerry Brown (“California Über Alles”) and Pol Pot (“Holiday in Cambodia”) with equal venom.
  • In God We Trust, Inc. (1981, EP) — Faster, harder. “Nazi Punks Fuck Off!” became an anti-fascist anthem.
  • Plastic Surgery Disasters (1982) — More complex. “Moon Over Marin,” “Halloween.”
  • Frankenchrist (1985) — Controversial. Included H.R. Giger’s Penis Landscape poster — led to Biafra’s obscenity trial (acquitted).
  • Bedtime for Democracy (1986) — Final album. The band dissolved.

Jello Biafra

Jello Biafra (born Eric Boucher, 1958) is punk’s great satirist — his quavering, caustic vocal style and absurdist-yet-sharp lyrics made the Dead Kennedys unique in early hardcore. Biafra ran for mayor of San Francisco in 1979 (on a platform that included banning cars and hiring the unemployed to panhandle in wealthy neighborhoods). He finished fourth.

After DK, Biafra founded alternative-tentacles (with East Bay Ray — later a source of legal conflict) and pursued spoken word, collaborations (Lard, with Ministry’s Al Jourgensen), and political activism.

Alternative Tentacles

Biafra and East Bay Ray founded Alternative Tentacles (1979) to release DK’s records. The label became one of the most important independent punk labels — releasing DK, Butthole Surfers, D.O.A., Nomeansno, and dozens of others. Later became the source of a bitter lawsuit between Biafra and former bandmates over royalties.

The Obscenity Trial

In 1986, a 14-year-old girl purchased Frankenchrist (1985) at a record store. Her mother discovered the included H.R. Giger poster (Penis Landscape — a painting of multiple figures engaged in intercourse) and filed a complaint. The result: Jello Biafra and Alternative Tentacles were charged with distribution of harmful matter to minors. The trial (1987) ended in a hung jury — Biafra was acquitted. The trial was a landmark First Amendment case and one of the most significant moments in punk’s fight against censorship.

The Alternative Tentacles Lawsuit

After DK’s breakup, a bitter legal battle erupted between Biafra and former bandmates over royalties and control of the DK catalog. The former members (East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, D.H. Peligro) won a $200,000+ judgment against Biafra in 2000, claiming he had diverted royalties. The dispute led to the DK catalog being reissued without Biafra’s involvement and “reunion” tours without him (2001-present, with various vocalists including Ron Reyes and Skip).

Influence on Political Punk

Dead Kennedys proved that punk could be both musically excellent AND politically sharp. Biafra’s satirical approach — attacking the left AND the right, using absurdist humor to make deadly serious points — influenced every political punk band that followed. Propagandhi, Anti-Flag, and dozens of others cite DK as a primary influence. “Nazi Punks Fuck Off!” remains the definitive anti-fascist punk anthem.
