Alternative Tentacles
San Francisco, California. Founded 1979 by Jello Biafra and East Bay Ray of dead-kennedys. Originally to release DK’s records, grew into one of the most important independent punk labels. One of punk’s longest-running labels — still active as of 2026.

The Biafra Lawsuit
After DK’s breakup, a bitter legal battle erupted between Biafra and former bandmates over royalties and control of the DK catalog. The former members (East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride, D.H. Peligro) won a $200,000+ judgment against Biafra in 2000, claiming he had diverted royalties. The dispute led to the DK catalog being reissued without Biafra’s involvement and the “reunion” tours without him (2001-present, with various vocalists).
Legacy
Alternative Tentacles proved that a punk label could survive for decades on principle — releasing challenging, political, uncompromising music. The label’s catalog is one of punk’s deepest.
