Melvins

Montesano / Seattle, Washington. Formed 1983 by Buzz Osborne (guitar/vocals) and Dale Crover (drums). The bassist position has rotated (Matt Lukin, Lori Black, Kevin Rutmanis, Jared Warren, Steven McDonald, etc.). One of the most important bands in heavy music — they bridge metal, sludge, and experimental noise while influencing literally every heavy genre that followed.

Key Releases

  • Gluey Porch Treatments (1987) — Debut. Slow, heavy, weird. Flipper meets Black Flag meets Black Sabbath.
  • Ozma (1989) — Heavier. Dale Crover’s drumming becomes the band’s secret weapon.
  • Bullhead (1991) — Tighter. “Boris” is a sludge anthem.
  • Lysol (1992, later retitled Lysol/Lice-All) — One continuous 30-minute piece. Drone/doom before those terms existed.
  • Houdini (1993, Atlantic) — Major label debut. Kurt Cobain (friend and fan) played guitar on some tracks. “Honey Bucket,” “Night Goat.” Their most accessible album.
  • Stoner Witch (1994), Stag (1996) — Continued major label era. Experimental.
  • The Maggot (1999), The Bootlicker (1999), The Crybaby (2000) — Trilogy. Concept albums.
  • A Senile Animal (2006) — Two drummers (Crover + Coady Willis). Pummeling.
  • Nude with Boots (2008), The Bride Screamed Murder (2010), Freak Puke (2012), Tres Cabrones (2013), Hold It In (2014), A Walk with Love and Death (2017), Pinkus Abortion Technician (2018), Working with God (2021) — Prolific to a fault.

The Cobain Connection

Buzz Osborne was Kurt Cobain’s friend and mentor in Aberdeen, Washington. Cobain roadied for Melvins and cited them as his primary influence. This connection is often cited as a key factor in grunge’s development — Melvins’ slow, heavy sound was a direct precursor.

Why Melvins Matter

Melvins are the most important band that most people haven’t heard. They invented sludge metal (slow + heavy + punk attitude), influenced grunge (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains), shaped noise rock, and have released more albums than most bands have songs. Their refusal to stay in one genre — from drone to pop to experimental noise — made them impossible to categorize and impossible to ignore.
