Minor Threat

Washington, D.C. Formed 1980 by Ian MacKaye (vocals), Lyle Preslar (guitar), Brian Baker (bass), and Jeff Nelson (drums). Active 1980-1983. Three years, two EPs, one LP, one compilation. One of the most influential bands in punk history.

Key Releases

  • Minor Threat (1981, dischord-records) — Self-titled EP. “Filler,” “Straight Edge,” “In My Eyes.” 8 songs in under 10 minutes.
  • In My Eyes (1981, EP) — Four more songs. “Out of Step,” “Guilty of Being White.”
  • Out of Step (1983, LP) — The full-length. Tighter, more complex. “Betray,” “Think Again.”
  • Complete Discography (1989) — Everything on one disc.

Straight Edge

“Straight Edge” (46 seconds) didn’t just name a movement — it articulated a philosophy: “I’m a person just like you / But I’ve got better things to do / Than sit around and fuck my head / Hang out with the living dead.” MacKaye didn’t intend to start a movement. He was just singing about his life. But thousands of punks heard it and recognized themselves.

The X marked on hands at shows (indicating underage/not drinking) became straight edge’s symbol. The movement would evolve far beyond MacKaye’s intentions — see straight-edge for the full story.

The Sound

Minor Threat’s music is pure hardcore: fast, tight, aggressive, and impossibly short. Lyle Preslar’s guitar riffs are iconic. Jeff Nelson’s drumming is precise. MacKaye’s vocals are screamed declarations of conviction. The production (by Skip Groff and the band) is raw but clear — you can hear every instrument.

After Minor Threat

  • Ian MacKaye formed Embrace (1985-86) — first wave emo. Then fugazi (1987-2003). Founded dischord-records with Jeff Nelson.
  • Brian Baker formed dag-nasty (1985). Later joined Bad Religion (1994-present).
  • Jeff Nelson continued Dischord and various projects.
  • Lyle Preslar stepped away from music.
