Noise Rock

Rock music that emphasizes dissonance, feedback, unconventional song structures, and aggressive/noisy production. Emerged from punk and post-punk in the 1980s. Not a subgenre of punk per se, but deeply intertwined with punk — many noise rock bands came from hardcore scenes and retained punk’s intensity while abandoning its conventions.

Key Bands (1990s focus)

  • melvins — Aberdeen/Seattle. The heaviest, slowest, weirdest. Invented sludge.
  • The Jesus Lizard (Chicago/NYC, 1987-2009, reunited) — David Yow’s confrontational vocals, Duane Denison’s angular guitar. Goat (1991), Liar (1992). Touch and Go Records.
  • Big Black (Chicago, 1981-1987) — Steve Albini. Atomizer (1986), Songs About Fucking (1987). Drum machine, piercing guitar. Albini went on to be one of punk’s most important producers.
  • Helmet (NYC, 1989-) — Page Hamilton. Meantime (1992). Staccato, rhythmic, metallic. Influenced nu-metal (unwillingly).
  • Unsane (NYC, 1988-) — Chris Spencer. Scattered, Smothered & Covered (1995). Violent, noisy.
  • Shellac (Chicago, 1992-) — Steve Albini, Bob Weston, Todd Trainer. Math-rock meets noise. At Action Park (1994).
  • Cherubs (Austin, 1991-1994, reunited) — Heroin Man (1994). Lo-fi, chaotic.
  • Brainiac (Dayton, 1992-1997) — Tim Taylor died in car accident. Synth-punk/noise. Hissing Prigs in Static Couture (1996).
  • Lightning Bolt (Providence, 1994-) — Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson. Bass-and-drums noise. Known for floor-level performances.
  • The Dazzling Killmen (St. Louis, 1990-1995) — Face of Collapse (1994).
  • Cows (Minneapolis, 1987-1998) — Cunning Stunts (1992). Chaos.

The Touch and Go Connection

touch-and-go-records was noise rock’s home label — Big Black, Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Killdozer, Butthole Surfers. SST also released noise rock (Sonic Youth’s early work, Dinosaur Jr). These labels’ commitment to adventurous, uncompromising music made noise rock possible.

Influence

Noise rock’s influence ripples through grunge (Melvins → Nirvana), post-metal (Neurosis, Isis), math rock (Slint, Don Caballero), and noise-punk (Lightning Bolt, Lightning Bolt’s descendants). Steve Albini’s production work (Pixies, Nirvana, PJ Harvey) brought noise rock’s sonic philosophy to mainstream records.
