Slint

Louisville, Kentucky. Formed 1986 by Brian McMahan (guitar/vocals), David Pajo (guitar), Todd Brashear (bass), and Britt Walford (drums). Two albums. Broke up before the second one was released. One of the most influential bands in rock history.

Key Releases

  • Tweez (1989, touch-and-go-records) — Debut. Steve Albini production. Dissonant, angular, strange.
  • Spiderland (1991, Touch and Go) — THE album. “Breadcrumb Trail,” “Nosferatu Man,” “Washer,” “Good Morning, Captain.” Quiet, whispered spoken-word passages erupting into crushing crescendos. Math-rock-inflected post-punk. Widely considered the founding document of post-rock and one of the most important albums of the 1990s.

The Spiderland Mystery

Spiderland was released in 1991 to almost no attention. The band had already broken up. The album’s cover — four young men standing in a quarry, underwater up to their chests — became iconic. Over the next decade, as post-rock (Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky) became a genre, Spiderland was retroactively recognized as its origin point.

The album’s influence is impossible to overstate. Its quiet-loud dynamics, whispered vocals, and mathematical precision influenced everything from emo (American Football) to post-rock to atmospheric sludge.

The Louisville Connection

Slint came from Louisville, Kentucky — another small city with no punk pedigree. The Louisville scene (which also produced Squirrel Bait, Rodan, Rachel’s, and The For Carnation) was a hidden gem of American underground rock. Slint’s isolation — like Leatherface in Sunderland or At the Drive-In in El Paso — bred unique music.
