SNFU
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Formed 1981 by Ken Chinn (stage name Mr. Chi Pig, vocals), Marc Belke (guitar), Brent Belke (guitar, Marc’s twin brother), and Dave Bacon (drums). Named after the band’s practice of saying “Society No Fuckin’ Use” — or “SNFU” for short. One of the most important Canadian punk bands and a major influence on skate punk.

- …And No One Else Wanted to Play (1985) — Debut. Raw hardcore.
- If You Swear, You’ll Catch No Fish (1986) — Breakthrough. “She’s Not on the Menu,” “I’m Real Scared.” Melodic, catchy, still hardcore.
- Better Than a Stick in the Eye (1988) — More polished. “Painful Reminder.”
- The Last of the Big Time Suspenders (1991) — Compilation of early material.
- Something Green and Leafy This Way Comes (1993) — More alternative-rock influenced. Signed to Epitaph’s sub-label.
- The One Voted Most Likely to Succeed (1995) — Epitaph. Bigger production.
- FYULABA (1996) — Continued evolution.
Mr. Chi Pig
Ken Chinn was one of punk’s most charismatic and unpredictable frontmen — acrobatic stage presence, colorful costumes, improvised between-song comedy. He was also candid about his struggles with mental health, addiction, and poverty. Chi Pig died in 2020, homeless in Vancouver — a tragic end for one of punk’s great performers.
Why SNFU Matters
SNFU bridged the gap between hardcore and skate punk before there was a term for it. Their influence on bands like NOFX, Lagwagon, and Pennywise — bands that cited SNFU as a primary influence — is underacknowledged. They were Canada’s answer to the Descendents.
